Pythagoras Discoveries
Pythagoras made significant discoveries in mathematics, geometry, astronomy, and , music. In music, Pythagoras realized that vibrating strings produce harmonious tones when the ratios of the lengths of the strings are whole numbers, and that these ratios could be extended to other instruments. Also, Proclus, the Greek philosopher attributes that Pythagoras came up with the proof of irrational numbers and and the construction of cosmic figures, or the five platonic solids.
Philosophers credit him for these discoveries 1. The sum of the angles of a triangle is equal to two right angles. 2. The Pythagorean Theorem a^2 + b^2 = c^2 3. Constructing figures of a given area and geometrical algebra 4. The discovery of irrationals and the philosophy behind it 5. The five regular solids 6. In astronomy, he taught that the earth was a sphere at the center of the universe. Although he was wrong for thinking that the Earth is in the center, he is accredited for discovering that the Earth is a sphere |
